June Meeting 2015

This month our speaker was Norman Jeffrey who is the Gloucestershire County Organiser for the National Gardens Scheme. He told us the history of the scheme. It started in 1927 as a fund raising idea to support the training of District Nurses (pre NHS). A fund had been set up in memory of Queen Alexandra who had died the year before by a lady called Elsie Wagg. She persuaded people to open their gardens to the public for a shilling a visit. In the first year it raised £8000! Since then it has raised £45,000,000. Since the creation of the NHS the money has been donated to charities like Marie Curie, Macmillan, Carer's Trust and Hospice UK.

Afterwards he showed us some wonderful photos of Gloucestershire gardens and also some of his own garden. Entry is now £4 to £5 and includes a cup of tea and cake. For any keen gardeners it is a lovely way to spend a summer weekend. See www.ngs.org.uk for which gardens are open when.

Next month we have two meetings. As it is the 100th anniversary of the WI and the 90th anniversary of the Broad Town WI we are having a garden party on the 8th July 6.30 - 8.30 to celebrate. This is for past and present members only. Any past members who haven't received an invitation please contact Kate below. Then on July 22nd we are having a short walk round Avebury followed by a meal at the Red Lion at Avebury. Walk 6.30, meal 7.30.

We are a friendly group and welcome new members. Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall. If you are interested in visiting us. Please contact Kate on 01793 731536 or look at our information on the Broad Town website.

This month our speaker was Ged Fitzgerald and he advised us on 'How to Stay Safe on the Internet'. He explained the necessity of having strong passwords, good antivirus software, only paying for goods on secure websites, never allowing anyone who contacts you by phone to have remote access to your computer and many other ways of keeping safe. He also told us about some of the scams that are out there. You have probably all had a call for someone who says they are from Microsoft and that they have detected errors on your computer and offer to correct them at a cost. This scam has been going for several years and Microsoft have received 64,000 complaints/enquiries about this. Bearing in mind most people will have just put the phone down and won't have contacted Microsoft it shows how widespread this problem is. It was a very interesting and informative talk.

Next month our meeting will be on the National Gardens' Scheme. Norman Jeffrey will talk on how the scheme started and some of the local gardens taking part this year. This meeting will be held at Broad Town Village Hall on Wednesday June 17th at 7.30pm.

Our April meeting was a follow on from last February's meeting where Dr Simon Manchip talked to us about Dementia. This year Alison Bucknell a 'Dementia Champion' came to talk to us about how to be a 'Dementia Friend'. The idea behind this scheme is that by learning and understanding some of the issues facing dementia patients we can help and support them as they go about their daily lives - thus enabling them to continue to live in the wider community safely for longer. Patients benefit from having positive experiences in their lives for as long as possible. Dementia Friends hit their target of recruiting 1 million friends by March 2015 and have set a new target of 4 million by 2020. Several members joined up to be Dementia Friends following Alison's talk. 1 in 14 people now have dementia so this is becoming an increasingly important issue for all communities.

Next month our meeting will be on 'Staying Safe on the Internet'. Ged Fitzgerald will explain how to keep the fraudsters at bay! This meeting will be held at Broad Town Village Hall at 7.30pm on the 20th May.

As our planned speaker was unavailable we invited Angela Hughes to talk to us, at very short notice, for which we were very grateful.
Angela has worked as a volunteer at Erlestoke Prison for the last 6 years. Erlestoke Prison is near Westbury and is the only prison in Wiltshire. It accommodates about 500 male category C prisoners. It focuses on training and rehabilitation.
Angela is a trustee of ‘The Friends of Erlestoke Prison’, a charity which helps support offenders and keep them in touch with their families. They have been able to support worthwhile projects when government funding has been withdrawn.
Our March Annual General Meeting is on Wednesday 18th at 7.30pm at Broad town Village hall. Following the meeting we are to have a Tai Chi taster session.
We are a friendly group and welcome new members from the village, Wootton Bassett and the surrounding area, so come and meet us. For more information phone Jane on 731105.

At January’s meeting we discussed and voted on a shortlist of seven diverse resolutions. These will go before the National Federations Centennial AGM and the successful resolution will be used for the 2015 WI campaign.
Tracey Holland outlined her idea for a scrap book about Broad Town and its Women’s Institute in 2015, the year of the National WI Centenary and Broad Town’s 90th Birthday. She was inspired by a scrap book made by Wootton Bassett WI for the 50th anniversary in 1965, and now kept at the museum in the Town Hall.
Each month we will gather items for the scrap book so that future generations will see what life was like here. We hope to cover amenities and services, societies, flora and fauna, and businesses and professions of the residents.
February’s meeting is a talk by the Wiltshire Fire and Rescue service followed by a question and answer session and refreshments. This is an open meeting and guests are welcome. The meeting will be held at the village hall on Wednesday 18th February at 7.30pm. Please feel free to join us.
